What is the EU Deforestation Regulation and does it affect you?
The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) comes into force on 30 December 2026 for large and medium-sized companies, with micro and small enterprises following on 30 June 2027. It requires businesses placing covered commodities or derived products on the EU market to demonstrate they were produced on land not deforested after December 2020.
Sodium Stearate is derived from palm oil, and a delegated act adopted by the European Commission on 13 July 2026 expanded the regulation’s scope to include a range of palm oil derivatives, including fatty acids and related compounds. These newly added products carry a deferred application date of 30 December 2027 — a year later than the main EUDR deadline for large and medium companies. Even so, manufacturers and formulators using Sodium Stearate should start preparing now, as demonstrating a deforestation-free supply chain typically takes time to put in place with your chemical supplier
